Chapter Summary
The Eta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma began with their first meeting on February 8th in the Spring Semester of 2021. Seven virtual sisterhoods were spread out through the spring semester including a speed dating night to help us get to know each other better, a tik-tok night, a painting night where followed a painting tutorial on a Zoom call, a PowerPoint night where everyone made funny slide show to show the chapter, a trivia night to see who knows who best, a selfie museum for small-group photoshoots at the house, and a self-care sisterhood with a yoga class. The topics that we went over in education nights during the spring semester included one about nutrition and another about diversity and inclusion.
We had a virtual visit from leadership consultant, Sara Johnston, from March 7th to the 12th. There was a reflection sisterhood for seniors on March 20th. On April 5th the treasurer proposed the budget and presented it to the chapter and there was a sister hangout at the Fairmount Coffee Company. On April 6th there was a virtual mixer with the delta upsilon fraternity playing a trivia game. Parent’s day was held at Botanica on April 10th. The first pre-recruitment workshop was held April 21st. We held an in-person Mocktail Social with chapter members in place of formal on WSU’s campus on April 24th. There was a ritual review and dinner on April 26th for the new member class of 2020 before the final meeting of the semester. The final meeting of the semester was an in-person senior sendoff on May 3rd.
We returned to mostly in-person events during the fall semester. The fall semester began with work week from August 3rd-6th and recruitment the following week from August 8th-12th. Bid Day took place on the 12th and was a blue-on-blue theme. August 16th was formal pledging for 11 new members, and COB began. There were 5 sisterhoods during the fall semester including renting a food truck and playing games, going to a professional baseball game, going to a restaurant for pizza and ice cream, going to Chicken and Pickle for food and pickleball, and having a Christmas party at the end of the semester with food, a gift exchange, and a gingerbread house decorating contest. On August 18th there was a syllabus night.
September 3rd was COB bid day. The 21st was a mixer with Sigma Psi at the dog park. Family weekend took place on the first weekend of October and included an indoor picnic and movie and donuts with alumna on Sunday. The big-little reveal was October 2nd that weekend. There was a Midterm Mood Boost to help members destress on October 6th. PC fall social was on October 18th followed by the Founder’s Day celebration.
Our philanthropy event, Marshmallows for Mental Health took place on October 16th. People bought buttons for the event and made s’mores and played yard games. We also held two giveback events with Wichita Nutrition to raise additional money for our philanthropies. October 17th-23rd was I-week. On Monday individual slates went out during meeting. Tuesday was the I-week sisterhood where we went to Cox Farm to go through a corn maze and pick out little pumpkins at their pumpkin patch. Wednesday was pin box painting for new members. Thursday was initiation set-up. and Friday was the first ceremony followed by desserts. October 23rd was initiation followed by initiation tear-down and brunch to welcome our new actives to the chapter. The following Monday was a post-initiation ritual review for new actives and an education night with a success coach. October 29th was a mixer movie night with Tri-delta. November 1st was composite pictures. A senior meeting was held on November 2nd and the senior hangout was held on November 20th with food and games at the Kappa house. Presentation of the slate was on November 8th. There was an 80s themed date party at a roller-skating rink on November 13th. Leadership day was on the 21st for incoming and outgoing officers and officer installation officially took place on the last meeting of the semester on November 29th.
In the Spring we supported Oaklawn elementary school and the Fundamental Learning Center because they provided opportunities for us to get involved and learn more about Kappa’s national philanthropy. In the Fall we voted to support the South-Central Mental Health Center because there are many opportunities to get involved with them and we liked what their organization stood for. We held a book drive in the spring and were able to hold a food philanthropy event with s’mores and games during the fall semester to raise money for Kappa’s philanthropies.
We added a DEI officer to our chapter. Our DEI officer helped plan programming to enhance the chapter’s understanding of diversity and inclusion and made sure that everyone was knowledgeable about on-campus events celebrating diversity by diverse student organizations or the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Wichita State.
Operating in a Pandemic
While we were required to have the majority of our meetings and events online in the spring semester, we held nearly all of our chapter meetings and chapter council meetings over zoom. Sisterhoods, mixers, and PC events were also held virtually. During the fall semester we were able to transition into in-person events. Recruitment was held through zoom during philanthropy night when the most women come to the house, and the final nights were held in-person at the house. All initiation events were held in-person with a virtual option available. Meetings returned to in-person with a virtual option over zoom, and all events were held in-person. Masks were either highly recommended or required depending on the event and social distancing rules were followed whenever possible.
